Investigating our Box of Delights in Year 5!

30th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We were lucky enough to get a ‘Box of Delights’ from the Discovery Museum that was filled with artefacts from the Viking times in Britain.  We explored the items and thought carefully about what they might be, what they might’ve been made from and who might have used them.  The children were excellent with their justifications which backed up their ideas. After that, we thought about what it told us about the Vikings and if there was anything that we used today that was similar. We were amazed (and disgusted) when we found out that the Vikings would use an ear spoon to clean their ears!  It looked a bit like a modern cotton bud and it told us that the Vikings liked to keep themselves clean and had pride in their appearance. We made some gorgeous museum style fact cards to record our ideas.

CONGRATULATIONS!

15th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Congratulations to these children who were presented with Maths certificates in assembly. The child in each class who has made the most progress with their TT Rockstars gig since starting this academic year received a certificate.  There were 3 very special awards given to children who achieved 100/100 on their latest gig which is impressive, so an extra special well done to Finley Jopling, Ella-May Grant and Darla Mihaita!

SSOC Launch Event

15th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

The four members of our School Sport Organising Crew (SSOC) attended a launch event at Temple Park on Wednesday. They took part in various activities to teach them skills across four different strands: Teamwork, Communication, Leadership and Resilience. They impressed the young leaders from the secondary schools, who were in attendance and showed that they could demonstrate excellent teamwork skills already. They have been set various tasks that need to be completed by the end of the year and they can’t wait to inspire, engage and support the pupils in school with their physical activity and confidence in sport.

Year 6 studied British milliners as part of their art project!

15th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of an art project, year 6 studied British milliners and some weird and wonderful hat designs as well as more practical ones. Pupils then thought of some designs they might like to see of a hat and finally designed prototypes of their own. It was fun to be explorative and creative with unique ideas.

Year 5 visit Durham Cathedral!

15th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Tuesday 8th November, Year 5 visited Durham Cathedral. It was a perfect visit for us as it reinforced lots of our learning: Northern Saints in RE; Vikings in History and Architecture in Art.

We had a drama session to look at the tales of Saint Cuthbert and we acted out some of the stories associated with him. Through these stories, we explored what they told us about him as a person.

After that, we had a session which focused on Christians and how they express their beliefs. We found out that Durham Cathedral is still a working church but it has also been a hospital and even a prison!

During our visit we saw some amazing stained glass windows, lots of crosses and we saw the actual resting place of Saint Cuthbert!

We received some lovely feedback from the Education Team at Durham Cathedral…

Hi Mrs Rennie,

We wanted to thank you for the lovely day we have spent with your Year 5 classes. Not only was their behaviour impeccable, we were incredibly impressed by their engagement and the intelligent questions they asked throughout the visit.

Thank you for a brilliant day!

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

 Best wishes,

 Alys

Year 5/6 Bart Rippon Cup!

15th November 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday, our boy’s football team competed in the Bart Rippon Cup at Temple Park. There were 15 teams competing in total across the day, so the boys had lots of playing time. Overall we finished 4th place in our group matches, winning one game 4-0, drawing 0-0, and losing two matches 1-0. The games were very close and it is exciting to see our players continue to improve; they represented our school extremely well. Man of the Match was our Goalkeeper, Danial, for the fantastic saves he made throughout the day. Well done everyone!
