Year 3 had a fantastic day at Durham Oriental Museum where we found out lots more about the ancient Egyptians. We completed a gallery trail to help us answer questions about life in ancient Egypt and we handled artefacts and considered what they were and how they may have been used. In the afternoon, we saw a real mummy in a sarcophagus and we also enjoyed performing a weighing of the heart ceremony to help us decide what would happen to the pharaoh in the afterlife. We all had a great day!
Year 3 had a fantastic time learning more about the Ancient Egyptians with ‘That History Bloke’. We found out more about pharaohs and the clothes they wore. We then enjoyed learning about mumification and practised wrapping each other in bandages. We then wrote our names using hieroglyphics and played an Ancient Egyptian game.
On Wednesday 6th May, Year 5 were visited by Ben (Zeus) from Past Productions and we learned all about the Greeks! We found out about some of the differences between Athens and Sparta and how life for men and women was different. We learned about some Greek myths and then prepared and performed a play to tell the story which was great fun! We discovered that the Olympics were called the Athenian Games originally and then we took part in our own mini Olympic games! After lunch, we wrote persuasive letters in role as Greek characters linked to the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. We then used all of the work that we had done to design and make our own Greek plate that showed a traditional Greek theme – the end results were fantastic! Finally, we ended the day with a quiz to show how much we had learned, which was loads!
Year 4 had a fabulous day finding out all about the ancient Maya.
We learned how to count to ten with actions in Mayan.
We carried out drama sketches about different parts of Mayan civilisation.
We looked at different artefacts.
We took part in a quiz to remember all the facts learned.
4CL and 4AW had a great day at Jarrow Hall. We walked around a working Anglo Saxon farm. We listened to the Beowulf story in the grand hall around a roaring fire
We took part in a burial ceremony and finished the day with a battle re-enactment.
We took part in a World War 2 work shop ran by ‘That History Bloke’. We learned about what it was like for people to live through World War Two and listened to some real accounts of situations people lived through. We also got to examine many artefacts and find out what they were used for. Pupils back then would be taught how to recognise British and enemy planes to keep themselves as safe as they could, we played a game where we had to try to identify various WW2 planes. It was great fun but trickier than we thought!
4CL visited the Sunderland Wintergardens. We investigated the layers of the rainforest thinking about animals and plants.
We walked around answering questions to follow a trail. This was followed by sketching and colouring the plants.
Afterwards we went into Mowbray Park and completed questionnaires with members of the public about how they use the park.
We all had a fantastic day.
On Tuesday 21st October, Y5 were lucky enough to be visited by Richard (That History Bloke). First, we listened to a Viking saga called ‘Ragnar Hairylegs’ and we noticed some similarities between that and the British legend of The Lambton Worm. Richard brought loads of Viking artefacts for us to explore and ask questions about – we couldn’t believe how clever the Vikings were and that they actually invented travel mugs made from horns! We held swords, shields, combs, necklaces, hair pins and brooches. After that, we had a go at writing our names in runes on wax tablets and to end, we played tretavel an actual Viking game of strategy! We loved our workshop and it definitely brought our Viking history topic to an exciting end.
On Thursday 8th May Year 4 enjoyed a visit linked to the topic of Ancient Maya. During the day we enjoyed taking part in drama based activities to learn about the religious beliefs of the Maya. We also had the opportunity to examine artefacts and learn some of the language they used. We all had an enjoyable day and learned lots of new information.
