At Biddick Hall Junior School, we are committed to improving the lives of
all of the young people that we work with. This includes the LGBT+ young
people in our care, those from LGBT+ families, and LGBT+ staff
members.

We are proud to be a school, that for the last 2 years, has achieved the
Rainbow Flag Award. We have to reaccredit our award every two years to
show that we continue to be an inclusive school.

The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework for
primary schools, secondary schools, SEND schools and colleges. The
award focuses on positive LGBT+, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus
other related identities), inclusion and visibility.

The Rainbow Flag Award encourages a whole organisation approach to
LGBT+ inclusion, as well as developing strategies to effectively challenge
and combat LGBT phobic bullying.

There are six sections to gain for achieving, and sustaining a full Rainbow
Flag Award:

  • Skilled Teacher
  • Supportive Governors and Parents
  • Effective Policies
  • Pastoral Support
  • Inclusive Curriculum
  • Student Voice

Our School Council have been involved in creating a diversity section in
the school library where we sourced, bought and labelled books that were
inclusive of all people, including LGBT+, disability, race and religion.

Our curriculum continues to be inclusive where people from diverse
backgrounds and communities are included and represented positively.

We have supportive staff and governors who challenge any negativity
around diversity including LGBT+.

We have developed our policies and procedures to a high standard and
they are inclusive and effective; this was a strength in our school’s
accreditation.

We celebrated LGBT History month in February and have our annual
‘Proud to be Me’ Day planned for June, highlighting the importance of
acceptance and inclusion of all people and celebrating who we are. This is
a day that the children and the teachers really look forward to and there
will be more information on this nearer the time.
