Science Buddies visit Year 6 as part of our science week in school.

15th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Rachel from Science Buddies visited year 6 in Science Week to discuss experiments linked to ‘time’. We look at instantaneous results like touching a plasma ball, quick results like how to suck an egg into a flask using a lit match and then a longer time investigation which involved the melting time of chocolate, jelly, ice and butter in hot water and observing how water walks over time.

World Book Day 2024!

15th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

This year’s World Book Day was focused on how children are more likely to enjoy reading when their choices are championed and we make reading fun.

Children and staff were encouraged to wear a costume relating to a book character.

For the full day lessons were focused around WBD.  As part of this pupils were given the opportunity to take part in a school competition where they had to create a blurb and a front cover for a book that they would like to read.  Additionally, they could enter another competition for which their entries will be sent away, this involved them design a national book token.

As part of World Book Day an author called Paula Fowler visited our school to tell us what inspired her to start to write books. She lives locally and is a self-published author of Wizard Beano and Pals.

We had great fun finding out about the two books she has written so far and finding out about the characters in her stories and how she created them.  The themes of the stories are friendship, adventure, helping save the planet and looking after our wellbeing.  We also found out a little bit about the book she is currently writing.

STEM event at Vertu Motors Newcastle Eagles arena.

15th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 5 and Year 6 visited the Vertu Motors Newcastle Eagles arena to look at how STEM is involved in everything we do in sport. We looked at data analytics and watched a video to work out shooting percentages. We then carried out our own on-court experiment where we had to shoot and work out or own percentage of shots made compared to shots taken. We also considered the effect that forces have on dribbling, passing and shooting as well as the importance of technology and engineering in developing the correct footwear.

School and Science Council have been teaming up to help create an improved and cleaner environment around out school.

27th February 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

School and Science Council have been teaming up to help create an improved and cleaner environment around out school. Using litter pickers and black bags so far years 5 and 6 have joined forces to collect discarded litter. We were certainly surprised by how much litter was caught in bushes and hedges and found all sorts ranging from crisp packets, to cigarette boxes, plastic bags to pop cans. Next week years 3 and 4 will help the anti-litter campaign around the school premises.

On Thursday 11th January, we were visited by Will from a group called Rocksteady. He taught us about the various musical instruments such as an electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drumkit that make up a band and we listened carefully to the different sounds they made. We enjoyed singing and dancing to various songs that Will sang and played.

Year 6 visit The Life Centre in Newcastle!

15th December 2023S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 6 visited the Life Science Centre in Newcastle and had a fabulous day. The day was split into different activities, which included a super fun opportunity to go ice-skating on the outdoor ice-rink. We also participated in a ‘Light’ workshop linked to our science topic currently being studied where we used light sources and lasers to direct the path of light between walls and bouncing off mirrors to light up a disco ball as well as seeing how rainbows are formed. We also visited the Planetarium, watched a show, and looked around the Space Zone and the Wow Zone of the Science Centre. It was a very interesting and exciting trip.
