Come dine with Year 6!

20th June 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of one of our Design and Technology units called, ‘Cooking and nutrition: Come dine with me’, we researched starter recipes that included red pepper.  Working in small groups of 2 or 3 we then followed our recipe, including using the correct quantities of each ingredient and prepared and cooked our own starter.  At the end of the afternoon the rest of the year group came into to join our groups to try what we had created.

Hoops 4 Health basketball for Year 6!

20th June 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday 14th June, 10 children from year 6 went to a Hoops for Health basketball tournament at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle.  We were the only school from South Tyneside who attended. We played 6 games, winning two, drawing two and narrowly losing two.  We were runners-up on our court but unfortunately did not get through to the next round.  Our behaviour was impeccable all day and we had a lot of fun!

BRILLIANT BOLOGNESE IN YEAR 5!

22nd May 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Over the past few weeks in DT we have been researching Bolognese recipes and we created a healthy recipe. On Friday 17th May, we got the chance to make it! We prepared onions, garlic, carrots, celery, courgette, peppers and mushrooms using the bridge grip to protect our fingers. We sautéed the vegetables in vegetable oil and then added some seasoning, passata and chopped tomatoes.  We simmered the mix and then blended it to a smooth sauce before adding beef mince that we had gently fried (for those who wanted vegetarian, they just had the sauce).  We mixed the bolognese into penne pasta and added some parmesan and mixed herbs to our own portions to taste.  We absolutely loved it!

Amazing science fun in Year 6!

22nd May 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Katie from Science Buddies visited year 6 to dissect some lamb hearts with us. This is part of our Science learning this half term linking to ‘Circulation’. We explored the weight, shape and size of the heart and appearance. We discussed and identified chambers and heart strings and thought about how the heart serves us. It was so extraordinary to be hands on with an actual heart. What amazing science fun!

Science Week winners!

18th April 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of Science Week the whole school took part in a competition that centred on this year’s theme ‘Time’. Children could be creative in their presentation of this poster with some choosing life cycles over time or how over time, the planet is being destroyed as their focus. There were winners chosen from each class who were presented with an award and congratulated for the excellent efforts. Winning entries were also sent to the British Science Week 24 and we await to hear if we have any winners in early summer.

Year 6 visit Shipley Art Gallery!

18th April 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 6 visited Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead on Tuesday 16th April. We had a thoroughly enjoyable trip where we completed a workshop based on texture and materials. It was interesting to study cotton and wool and feel the consistency of both materials. We then went into a workshop area where we separated wool finely to make a 3D backdrop and then added some brightly coloured wool to express our creativity in the form of landscapes or animals for example. We covered this next with white mesh and then added warm soapy water. We firmly pressed this down to create a flat felt like image and peeled off the mesh: it left a funky coloured artistic felt pattern design which was them left to dry. It was great fun to work with this different Art medium. We also had the opportunity to explore the rest of the art gallery and loved seeing an incredible painting that showed Jesus washing his disciples feet prior to the last supper. It was lovely to appreciate different art forms and experience a trip to an art gallery.

Geography trip to Dogger Bank energy/ wind cluster offices.

22nd March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As a year group we visited Dogger Bank which is North East England’s offshore wind cluster. We learned about how companies such as Equinor are working hard to revolutionise renewable energy with wind farms using the awesome power of the North Sea wind. It was very interesting and aspirational too with lots of children learning about a range of jobs and company benefits in this industry. This trip linked well to our Geography topic ‘Energy’ but also with STEM too.
