Year 5’s Trip to Jorvik Viking Centre, York.

On Friday, 7th December Year 5 were very fortunate to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre in York. It was an early start for the children (and staff) but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to what was once a very important Viking town. We took part in a ‘Viking Sagas’ and ‘Viking Battle Tactics’ Workshop where we all were involved in re-telling stories about the famous Norse God, Thor and also were given the chance to handle replica Viking weapons. A great time was had by all!

Year 5 Rugby – Boldon School 18.10.18

5th November 2018S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Thursday, Year 5 took part in a Rugby Tournament at Boldon School. This was a great way for us to put into practice the skills we have learned from the Rugby coach that we have been very lucky to have this half term.

Our three teams played extremely well in their matches: Team A won their group matches and received medals; Team B came in second place and Team C, third place.

We all had a fantastic afternoon!

Year 5 Viking Boats!

12th October 2018S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In Year 5, we are finding about all about the Vikings.  In our DT lessons, we made these amazing Viking boat models.  After researching longships, and their characteristics and purposes, we planned and designed the different elements of our ships.  In small groups we then worked as a team to create our models using lots of skills such as communication, cutting, sewing and attaching in different ways. We needed to be very resilient as not everything went to plan but were all really pleased with our efforts.

Viking visitor in Year 5!

28th September 2018S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 5 were visited by Bjarni the Viking last week and he taught us all about Viking life with a focus on sailing, weapons and laws; we even held a trial! We wrote kenning poems; explored and enquired about Viking artefacts and some of us got to strike our very own Viking penny.  We had a great day and cannot wait to find out more about this fascinating History topic!

Year 5 moon buggies!

12th April 2018S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Linking to our science topics of Earth, Sun and Moon and Forces, we were given a design brief to make a moon buggy that could carry 3 moon rocks (rubbers).  We investigated different types of circuit, axle, chassis and pulley, deciding which we wanted to use for our vehicle.  After a lot of trial and error, perseverance and problem solving, we all managed to make a moon buggy that travelled forwards (some more successfully than others!) We then raced them at the end to see which was the champion.  After a slight technical difficulty to start with, Coben, Kieran and Harvey made the moon buggy with the smoothest ride, most steady speed and straightest line of travel – well done boys!
