Spanish Sculptures in Year 5!

12th February 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Spanish Sculptures

As part of creative week Year 5 pupils have worked with a variety of materials to produce a collage sculpture, inspired by the work of artist Joan Miro. The children began by making simple collages inspired by some of the elements in Miro’s paintings. Joan Miro used automatic drawing in his work. We explained to the children that we were going to make an automatic drawing over our collages, to add another layer of meaning to the work. They were then challenged to make sculptures, inspired by Miro, and inspired also by their own experiences of making the collage and using automatic drawing.

Hoops 4 Health Tournament!

17th January 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Thursday 16th January, 2 teams from Year 5 went to Temple Park to play in the Hoops for Health basketball tournament.

Team 1 won four out of their five games. The first game was 16 – 0, the second was 8 – 0, the third 3 – 1, match four 10 -0 and the final match we lost 3 – 1.

Team 2 won 3, lost one and drew one.  The first game was 5 – 0, the second was 2 – 1 to the other team, the third 4 – 0, match four 2 – 2 and the final match we won 4 – 1.

Both teams got through to the quarter finals for coming second in our groups.  Unfortunately, we had to play each other in this match and Team 1 won 2 – 1.  This means that Team 1 have made it through to the Grand Finals which will be played at the Newcastle Eagles Community Arena on Friday the 7th February.  We will play in the semi-finals before the Eagles match and then if we get through to the final, that will be played at half time in the Eagles match.

We had a great day and everyone played extremely well and showed good sportsmanship.

Year 5 DT project!

18th December 2019S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed their DT project for this term! We were tasked with making an electronic greetings card and thought it would tie in perfectly with Christmas.

The children have spent time exploring circuits with a difference – learning how graphite and copper are electrical conductors and understanding the electrical components needed to make a complete circuit.

The children had to design a greetings card which included at least one lit-up element and needed to carefully place their LED bulb into their circuit.

We are thrilled with the results!

Year 5 Aboriginal Dance!

22nd November 2019S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of multi-cultural week, Year 5 are studying Australia. We have looked closely at the history of Aboriginal Australia. The first people of Australia were known as Aborigines. Aborigines have a unique way of telling their history, they use songs, dance and stories that are passed from generation to generation. We enjoyed telling stories through aboriginal dance, listening closely to traditional Australian instruments being used, like the didgeridoo.

Clay Viking Warriors!

18th October 2019S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In art this week, Year 5 have enjoyed using clay to sculpt Viking Warriors. We used various sculpting skills and researched typical Viking facial features. Did you know that most Vikings grew beards as long hair was a symbol of strength? We are really pleased with our results!

Girl’s Football!

4th October 2019S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Yesterday, the girl’s football team played in their first tournament of the season at Boldon School.

We played three matches: the first match was against St Aloysius where we drew 1-1; we played Hedworth Lane in our second match and lost 1-0 and in our final match against Fellgate, we won 4-0.

We saw some spectacular goals from Hannah and Ellie but the whole team played extremely well.  It has been a good start to the tournament, our skills continue to improve and we’re excited for our next match.

Year 5 trip to Jorvik!

4th October 2019S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Monday 30th September, all of Year 5 descended on York to find out more about the Vikings!

We went to the Jorvik Viking Centre where we took a trip back in time and travelled around a Viking village.  We saw combs being made from antlers, children playing, food stalls, shoe shops and rats running around – we even experienced what it would’ve smelled like which was not very pleasant!  Although the Viking times were over 1000 years ago, we realized that there were many similarities in the way that they lived and the way that we live today – Viking children even had an equivalent of a fidget spinner made from the knuckle bone of a pig!

We were also lucky enough to attend two workshops where we found out about Viking battle tactics and Viking sagas.  Our guide showed us several Viking weapons and how and why they’d have been used in battle and we found out that a female Viking warrior was called a ‘shield maiden’.  During our Viking Sagas workshop, we were told an ancient Norse story and some of us got to act it out which was great fun.  We look forward to writing our own Viking sagas in our English lessons in the next few weeks.
