Some important information about coming back to school in September.
If you are looking for ways to make sure that your children are still getting their 60 minutes of physical activity whilst at home and you are also looking for home schooling ideas, then have a go at one of these!
Why not have a go at this digital escape room with a Harry Potter theme.
Schools up and down the country were raising money for Sport Relief last Friday. We enjoyed learning the official Sport Relief dance routine and completing a variety of fun activities. Thank you to everyone who donated!
Year 5 are currently studying the Amazon rainforest and as part of our study, we have researched the different species of animals and insects living there, looking at how they have adapted to the Amazon’s climate. We decided to choose our favourite Rainforest animal and, using acrylic paint, painted them onto a canvas. We are very pleased with the results.
In MST week in Design and Technology, Year 5 have been exploring and making bridges! We looked at the common shapes in bridges and we noticed triangles were used in most bridges. We found out that triangles are very strong shapes and create tension and compression which make a bridge really strong so it can withstand heavy loads. We made spaghetti truss bridges in small groups and evaluated their success. Finally, we made a wooden truss bridge using what we had learned! We are really proud of our results and had lots of fun!
On Thursday 5th March we celebrated World Book Day. This year’s theme was ‘Share a Million Stories’. We began the day by discussing the importance and benefits of sharing a story and who we could share a story with.  The rest of the day was spent completing book related activities and completing a school competition. As part of the day we either wore our pyjamas or dressed up as a book character, we were very impressed with the children’s efforts and enthusiasm.
Year 5 enjoyed a Handball taster session with a coach from the Newcastle Vikings Handball Team. We had a great afternoon being introduced to the skills needed to play this sport.
On Friday 7th February a Year 5 basketball team played a semi-final and a final at The Newcastle Eagles Arena. In the semi final we played Forest View and won. However during an exciting final in front the crowds we lost to St. Bede’s by one basket. We all had a great night and were a credit to the school. Well done!
During Creative Week, Year 5 have been working with artist Isabella Carreras to produce work linked to our views on the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest. We were inspired by the work of artist Abel Rodriguez, a resident of the Amazon Rainforest and produced a collaborative mural to protest the destruction of the Rainforest.
