Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the OpenZone at The Word this week. The children enjoyed exploring the Paint Application to produce a Christmas Tree Decoration, which was then laser cut on to a piece of wood for them to take home. They also used their coding skills to produce a Christmas themes animation. Later in the afternoon, they loved using the Lego WeDo sets to program their robots for different purposes. We all had a fantastic time!
As part of our Science Topic, children in Year 5 have been using their knowledge of properties of materials to separate two materials which had been mixed together. We explored how the processes of Filtration, Evaporation, Sieving and Magnetic Attraction could be used to separate a mixture of solids, liquids and gases.
In Year 5 we are studying the Vikings. Vikings were people who came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, collectively known as Scandinavia. We know lots about the Vikings including why they raided monasteries (Lindisfarne being the first) and what weapons they used. We know about some of the Anglo-Saxon kings (Alfred the Great, Ethelred the Unready and Edward the Confessor) and what they tried to do to stop the brutal invasions, including the introduction of Danegeld which translates as ‘paying the Dane’ which was literally paying the Vikings to go away!
Today, we were lucky enough to become Historians and explore Viking Artefacts. We handled them carefully and asked questions such as: ‘What is it made from?’; ‘What could it be?’ and ‘Who might’ve used it?’. After our explorations, we chose 2 objects and we completed a museum information card with our findings!
Children in Year 5 have enjoyed improving their sculpture skills by making a Viking Warrior’s head from clay. Using different clay tools and slip glue, the children thought about how they could create texture using the clay – we’re really pleased with the results!
As part of our Science topic, ‘Properties and Changes of Materials’, children have been investigating electrical conductors and insulators. After making predictions about which materials would be electrical conductors, the children created a circuit to test which materials would allow electricity to pass through them.
Children in Year 5 enjoyed creating their striking abstract Viking Weapon art this week. By layering templates of different Viking weapons, they created an abstract design by completing different sections using a range of different lines to show texture and pattern.
We celebrated Roald Dahl Day on the 13th September (Roald Dahl’s birthday). Many of us wore yellow as this is his favourite colour. Each class spent the day completing sessions linked to Roald Dahl.
We each donated £1 which will be given to the Roald Dahl charity, which provides specialist nurses and support for seriously ill children. Today, there are currently 82 Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses caring for over 21,000 seriously ill children across the UK.
Well done to all our academic prize winners who were in school to receive their books!
