European Day of Languages

3rd October 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On 26th September, we celebrated ‘European Day of Languages’. We talked about the importance of learning different languages and discussed all of the benefits it brings.

We then took part in a range of activities linked to Spain and the Spanish language. We watched videos about Spanish-speaking countries; completed fact-files; undertook puzzles and wordsearches; practised saying Spanish greetings and even made some flags and Spanish fans.

We decided upon this focus as in Year 6, we now undertake some Spanish taster sessions. It is also useful because many of us will study Spanish when in the comprehensive school. Additionally, Spain is still a popular holiday destination.

We ended the day by taking part in a competition, designing a t-shirt to celebrate the theme of ‘Language opens hearts and minds’.

On Friday 19th September, Emma Lewell (The Labour MP for South Shields), visited our school and met with our newly elected School Council.

25th September 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday 19th September, Emma Lewell (The Labour MP for South Shields), visited our school and met with our newly elected School Council. She told the children about her job and why she enjoyed it – getting to meet people from South Shields (including children) was one of the top things.  She said that she liked to ask people if they were happy with the job she was doing and if not, what changes they would like to see. Our School Council are going to be doing this within school, making sure that all of the children in their classes get to make suggestions for improvements to our school. Emma told us that she was elected in 2013 at the age of 35 and before becoming a member of parliament, she has many other jobs including cleaning, working in restaurants, answering phones in call centres and as a social worker. The children had the chance to share with Emma some suggestions that they thought would improve South Shields, including children 11 and under being able to travel free on buses and for things to be a bit cheaper for people to buy.

Our School Council are looking forward to getting started on making a difference to Biddick Hall Junior School 2025-26!

Roald Dahl competition

22nd September 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We read part of the twits and found out about some of the tricks Mr and Mrs Twit played on each other.  We then had to be creative and write our own revolting recipe like the Squishy Wormy Spaghetti Mrs Twit made for Mr Twit. These were our winners.

We celebrated Roald Dahl Day

18th September 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We celebrated Roald Dahl Day and completed a range of tasks linked to some of his books. If we had something yellow to wear we wore it because that was his favourite colour. We also each donated £1 to his charity. We had great fun!

Great Athletes Sponsor Event

10th July 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Our Great Athletes Sponsor Event took place and what an event it was! GB Wheelchair Tennis player, Antony Cotterill, visited our school to lead us in our sponsor event. Everybody tried their hardest with the circuit exercises (even the teachers!) before settling down to hear about Antony’s story.

In 2003, Antony broke his neck, leaving him unable to walk and using a wheelchair full-time. Inspired by watching wheelchair tennis during his recovery, he took up the sport and has since represented Great Britain at the Paralympic Games, winning numerous singles and doubles titles worldwide.

The whole school were fascinated by Antony’s experiences and definitely left feeling inspired. Well done everyone!

Science council in action!

10th July 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Picking up litter is important for both environmental and personal well-being. It helps reduce pollution, protects wildlife and ecosystems, and can boost mental and physical health. Additionally, it can foster a sense of community and encourage responsible behaviour. Science Council did a great job at filling about 5 large bin bags.

Light and Shadows Science Buddies Workshop in Year 3

8th May 2025S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

This week, Year 3 had a visit from Katie from Science Buddies. We made predictions and investigated how shadows can be changed. First, we investigated whether we could make shadows smaller or larger then we investigated whether we could change the shape and colour of a shadow. We found that a shadow can be made smaller when the object is further away from the light source and the shadow is bigger when it is closer to the light source. We found that the shape and colour of the shadow could not be changed.
