Year 5 Hoops4 Health basketball tournament.

7th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Thursday 15th February, some of Year 5 visited the Vertu Motors Arena where we took part in a basketball tournament with other schools from South Tyneside.  We took 3 teams and the all played exceptionally well, with all 3 teams making it through to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, 2 of our teams were knocked out, but one made it through to the semi-finals!  These are to be held on Friday 8th March before the Newcastle Eagles play their match. If we make it through to the final, the game is played at ½ time in front of thousands of people!  Watch this space for an update on how we did!

Making a soft toy in DT in Year 5!

7th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In Year 5, our DT topic in the Spring first ½ term was to make a soft toy.  We created cardboard templates, cut the body from felt (2 identical pieces) and then we sewed on some appendages (fins, eyes, ears, noses etc). After that, we used a blanket stitch to join the two edges of the front and back together. A blanket stitch is a strong and decorative stitch, so it was perfect for our projects.  Lastly, we stuffed our toys and then used more blanket stitch to close the stuffing entrance. We are so proud of our end products and couldn’t wait to show them off!

Year 5 visit the Life Science Centre in Newcastle

7th March 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday 16th February, Year 5 visited the Life Science Centre in Newcastle to round off our Science topic of Earth and Space. We went into the planetarium and learned all about constellations and the relative sizes of the planets as well as the differences in their orbits and rotations – it really brought our learning to life! We explored the Space exhibit and some of us even got to film a weather report! We loved exploring the other elements of the Science Centre including the engineering elements in the WoW zone. We also experienced a special Science show all about colour and we were amazed that we all saw colours slightly differently.

School and Science Council have been teaming up to help create an improved and cleaner environment around out school.

27th February 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

School and Science Council have been teaming up to help create an improved and cleaner environment around out school. Using litter pickers and black bags so far years 5 and 6 have joined forces to collect discarded litter. We were certainly surprised by how much litter was caught in bushes and hedges and found all sorts ranging from crisp packets, to cigarette boxes, plastic bags to pop cans. Next week years 3 and 4 will help the anti-litter campaign around the school premises.

Number Day!

27th February 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday 2nd February, we enjoyed Number Day! We got to play with loads of games but used our maths skills such as counting, logic and problem solving.  We also did maths puzzles and investigations involving numbers!

Year 5 did activities including creating a mathematical clock where we had to create calculations with at least 2 operations in them to create the numbers 1 to 12. Another investigation was to count the frequency of different letters in an extract from The Lion the Witch and the wardrobe. We tallied the numbers and then created a bar chart, thinking carefully about what the scale had to go in up the side.  Number day was rounded off with a number related quiz!

Group Rocksteady entertain Biddick Hall Junior School!

16th January 2024S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Thursday 11th January, we were visited by Will from a group called Rocksteady. He taught us about the various musical instruments such as an electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drumkit that make up a band and we listened carefully to the different sounds they made. We enjoyed singing and dancing to various songs that Will sang and played.
