Using electronic systems in a greetings card!

18th December 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In Year 5, our DT unit was on using electronic systems in a greetings card.  We looked at electrical circuits and the components needs to make one work, then how these could be adapted to use in a greetings card.  We found out the graphite was a conductor, but it wasn’t as reliable as copper tape (which we used in place of wire).  We designed Christmas cards that had a light-up element and we used LEDs for the lights as they are small, easy to work with and powerful. We used coin cell batteries as these worked best with the type of switch that we included (we didn’t want our cards to run out of battery too quickly!) It was tricky at times to ensure our circuit was complete, with gaps in the tape where the LEDs and the battery were. We were really pleased with our end results and hope that they bring joy to our families this Christmas.

Design Technology in Year 3!

7th December 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 3 have been constructing 3d shapes to use when constructing a castle in Design and Technology.

They have  researched castles and designed a castle each.

Now they are creating the shapes they will use. They have been learning to fold and score card accurately. They have had to use determination and problem solving skills. They have had a great time.

Rock Out 2020!

17th November 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, November 9th – 13th we took part in a competition for Maths Week England, called Rock Out 2020.

For every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, the children earned their class a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform calculated the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours). Our winning Classes were:

1st – Year 6 – Set 2

2nd –  Year 6 – Set 1

3rd – 5LR

A huge well done to everyone who took part.  We didn’t manage to get into the top 3 schools, but nevertheless, we are proud of our achievement. We had some outstanding efforts from all year groups, but the top 3 students in the whole school were:

1st – Dennis Rusu (Year 6 – Set 2)

2nd – Hayan Al Dahi (5LR)

3rd – Oliver Wilkins (Year 6 – Set 2)

Youth Sport Trust Online Club

17th November 2020a hayward
The Youth Sport Trust have launched a brand-new initiative. Until the 18th December, they are running a free 30-minute online club which is available for all children and young people to participate in some sport, develop skills and of course have fun!
The club will be held every day from 5pm and is accessed through a live video on their Youtube channel. The club will be led by Athlete Mentors with different backgrounds, abilities and from different sports.
Each session will have a specific theme based on the day which will be…
Adventure Monday – this might involve getting children to do floor, wall climbing and map reading all within their living room.
Tuesday Play – imaginative play utilising resources in the house to create games and activities to get active.
Wild Wednesday – some high tempo competitive activities involving personal challenges.
Thinking Thursday – introducing cognitive challenges for children through movement. Active noughts and crosses and introducing an element of competition – whether that be against themselves, the clock, their siblings or remotely with friends.
Fun Friday – a chance for children to let loose and have some fun. Dancing and doing what makes them feel good.
As you are aware, many children and young people are currently missing out on their usual sport clubs. This is a great opportunity for them to develop skills and learn something new.

Year 6 Lyres!

13th November 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We used mod-roc to make Ancient Greek lyres.  We began with dowel, plastic sheeting, newspaper and wire to create the structure.  Then we covered it with mod-roc.  In our next lesson, we’ll be decorating them and adding strings.
