Making pop-up books in Year 5!

3rd June 2021S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

For Maths, Science and Technology week, In Year 5, we made pop-up books.  Our brief was to create a pop-up book for a Year 1 child based on a nursery rhyme.  We chose Humpty Dumpty.  We designed our books and decided which type of mechanism we would use on each page (a lever, a slider or a pop-out box).  We needed to use our maths skills for measuring and looking at angles for our levers. It took a long time to get everything just right and we really concentrated on making the books attractive to our audience by making them bright, colourful and interactive.  We are so pleased with our end results – we think they are EGG-cellent!

Spot the signs

19th May 2021a hayward

County lines is a major threat to young people and vulnerable adults throughout England,
Scotland and Wales. “County lines” is a term used to describe gangs and organised criminal
networks involved in moving illegal drugs in the UK. They are likely to use young people to
move and store the drugs or money, and they will often use violence and force.

This leaflet provides information on the warning signs for parents/carers to look out for and tips on what they can do to help. There are contact numbers and email addresses at the end if you need help, advice or guidance with anything County Lines related.

Soft Toy Project

12th April 2021a hayward

Our DT project in Year 5 was to create a stuffed toy.  We had to design something for a younger child and take this into account during our planning.

First, we drew our designs and annotated them with what colours and stitches we’d use as well as any additions such as ears, spots or spikes.

Next, we made our template on card.  We only needed the outline of the main shape and the outline of any appendages we were going to add. These were carefully cut out.

Then, we pinned our templates to our felt.  We had 2 layers of felt (one for the front of the toy and one for the back) which made it tricky to cut out.

After that came the sewing!  Our first stage was to stitch any details onto the main body of one of the pieces of felt.  We then used a blanket stitch to join the front and back together, making sure we left a gap for stuffing.

Next we stuffed the toy using a pencil to push it through into the toy, making sure it filled any corners.

Finally, we used blanket stitch to close the hole we used for stuffing.

We are really pleased with our end results – what do you think?
