This week in Science Council we made hover boards using old CDs, fruit shoot lids and balloons. We had fun testing the hover capabilities!
Year 5 and 6 were visited by a PC and a Community Support Officer to learn a bit more about knife crime.
We learned:
- If you are with someone who is carrying a knife you can get into trouble as well – even if you aren’t carrying one.
- It is illegal to buy a knife if you are under 18.
- It is illegal to sell a knife to someone who is under 18.
- You have to have a purpose for carrying a knife if you are over the age of 18.
- If you carry a knife, you are more likely to be stabbed with it.
- It is NOT cool to carry a knife.
- It can change someone’s life – the victim and their family and friends, the perpetrator and their family and friends, the professionals who have to deal with the crime as well as any bystanders who might witness it.
All the children enjoyed a performance of Robin Hood.

To celebrate Space Week this week, Science Council made their own rockets that use air pressure to take off and fly into the air!
Erupting volcano fun in Science Council club. Look at this fabulous task we did at club: we made play dough volcanos and then created our own chemical reaction to make it look like lava erupting – it was very cool!
We attended a RAP event which was about reducing accidents at play. Within this afternoon there were workshops about electricity safety (Northern Power grid), water safety (RNLI), travelling safely on the metro (Nexus), Anti-social behaviour (Northumbria police) and fire safety (south Tyneside Brigade). We learned a lot and had great fun.
On 26th September, we celebrated ‘European Day of Languages’. We talked about the importance of learning different languages and discussed all of the benefits it brings.
We then took part in a range of activities linked to Spain and the Spanish language. We watched videos about Spanish-speaking countries; completed fact-files; undertook puzzles and wordsearches; practised saying Spanish greetings and even made some flags and Spanish fans.
We decided upon this focus as in Year 6, we now undertake some Spanish taster sessions. It is also useful because many of us will study Spanish when in the comprehensive school. Additionally, Spain is still a popular holiday destination.
We ended the day by taking part in a competition, designing a t-shirt to celebrate the theme of ‘Language opens hearts and minds’.
On Friday 19th September, Emma Lewell (The Labour MP for South Shields), visited our school and met with our newly elected School Council. She told the children about her job and why she enjoyed it – getting to meet people from South Shields (including children) was one of the top things. She said that she liked to ask people if they were happy with the job she was doing and if not, what changes they would like to see. Our School Council are going to be doing this within school, making sure that all of the children in their classes get to make suggestions for improvements to our school. Emma told us that she was elected in 2013 at the age of 35 and before becoming a member of parliament, she has many other jobs including cleaning, working in restaurants, answering phones in call centres and as a social worker. The children had the chance to share with Emma some suggestions that they thought would improve South Shields, including children 11 and under being able to travel free on buses and for things to be a bit cheaper for people to buy.
Our School Council are looking forward to getting started on making a difference to Biddick Hall Junior School 2025-26!
We read part of the twits and found out about some of the tricks Mr and Mrs Twit played on each other. We then had to be creative and write our own revolting recipe like the Squishy Wormy Spaghetti Mrs Twit made for Mr Twit. These were our winners.
