Explore Learning in Year 5!

23rd November 2016S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Tuesday 15th November

LO: To understand haiku and to write our own.

We were lucky enough to have a poetry workshop with Explore Learning.  We talked about haiku poetry, its origins and format.  After learning the names and symbols for correct and incorrect in Japanese, we answered questions about haiku to check our understanding.  In our beautiful booklets, there were some traditional and modern pictures to help us to generate our own ideas for our own haiku poems.  We wrote a poem in our pairs and then one individually.  They were so lovely, we decided to copy them up and carefully illustrate them for display.  You can see them in the Year 4/5 corridor.

In Science Year 5 are looking at materials and their properties.  The children had to work in groups to independently investigate which material would be best for mopping up spills.  All materials, equipment and recording methods were chosen by the children and they had to ensure that they carried out fair testing – not an easy thing to do!

A Viking comes to Year 5!

21st October 2016S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We were lucky enough to have Bjarni the Viking come to Year 5 to introduce us to our topic of The Vikings.  He was able to tell us about Viking warriors and Scandinavian farming, trade and life.  When he demonstrated how the weapons were used and why they were designed in the way they were, we were all on the edge of our seats; Mrs Rennie nearly had several heart attacks.

This got us all really enthused about the Vikings and we were excited to find out more in our KSUW lessons.

Design Technology Project – Viking Boats!

21st October 2016S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In DT we made these Viking boats to link with our KSUW topic.  We worked in small groups to research, design, plan make the structure.  To challenge us, we had specific design criteria: to make a sail that moves up and down and for the dragon head to be detachable. We are so proud of our end products and the 4 hours hard work was worth it!

Hoops for Health

5th December 2014S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

9 children from year 5 went to Temple Park to take part in a ‘Hoops for Health’ Tournament. We played amazingly well and won our first 5 matches. We drew the sixth match and then unfortunately lost the 7th. We got through to a knock-out semi-final where we played really well but were defeated by an excellent team.
