On Thursday 30th January, 29 Year 5 children went to the Vertu Motors Arena to take part in a Hoops4Health basketball tournament. We had a brilliant day and the children played some excellent basketball. They worked well as a team, showed great sportsmanship and were an absolute credit to their parents and the school. We were also lucky enough to meet the Eagles men’s team after one of their training sessions as they came in to give everyone a (very) high five!
In music in Year 5, we are looking at South and West African music. We learned a South African song called ‘Shosholoza’ and then we learned to play 4 chords on the glockenspiel to accompany the song. We played these as a chord progression and sang along with a few drums to keep our rhythm on track. We thoroughly enjoyed it and Mrs Rennie thought we were marvellous!
As part of our new history topic ‘Impact of World War 2’, Year 6 enjoyed a visit from ‘That History Bloke’. We had great fun looking at artefacts including kit bags, gas masks, clothes and toys. They helped us to learn a lot about life during war-time. Just look at the fun we had!
In the second part of the workshop, we learned about aircraft and played a game which encouraged us to distinguish between English and German planes. We actually did really well, getting all of the answers correct!
We ended the session by listening to an air-raid siren . . . . it was extremely loud!

On Friday 13th December children came to school in their Christmas Jumpers or non-uniform. These are some from 6GA.
On Friday 13th December 30 children from Year 4 attended the “Skip into Christmas” skipping festival at Temple Park. The children took part in a variety of skipping activities to develop fitness and have fun. We all had a great time and loved learning new skills.
On Wednesday 4th December year 6 visited West Harton Methodist Church to take part in a Christmas Labyrinth. We went around 9 stations finding out about the journey that Mary and Joseph took in the Christmas nativity story. It was interesting to find out about what Christians beliefs are about the event that lead up to the birth of Jesus.
The volunteers who ran the event said that were very well-mannered and they were extremely impressed with our behaviour and enthusiasm.
On Tuesday 27th November, 28 children from Year 5 went to Temple Park Leisure Centre to take part in a sports hall athletics competition. There were 6 track events including running and obstacle relays and 6 field events including javelin and standing long jump. We all had a great day and enjoyed pushing ourselves in events that were new to us.
Year 6 visited the Life Science Centre and took part in a light workshop along with other activities including visiting the Creativity, Wow, Space and Brain Zone. We also visited the Planetarium where we found out about star constellations and planets. It was a great day and learned a lot about light!
