Rainforest animals on canvas!

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 5 are currently studying the Amazon rainforest and as part of our study, we have researched the different species of animals and insects living there, looking at how they have adapted to the Amazon’s climate. We decided to choose our favourite Rainforest animal and, using acrylic paint, painted them onto a canvas. We are very pleased with the results.

Year 5 making bridges!

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In MST week in Design and Technology, Year 5 have been exploring and making bridges!  We looked at the common shapes in bridges and we noticed triangles were used in most bridges.  We found out that triangles are very strong shapes and create tension and compression which make a bridge really strong so it can withstand heavy loads.  We made spaghetti truss bridges in small groups and evaluated their success.  Finally, we made a wooden truss bridge using what we had learned!  We are really proud of our results and had lots of fun!

World Book Day 2020!

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Thursday 5th March we celebrated World Book Day.  This year’s theme was ‘Share a Million Stories’.  We began the day by discussing the importance and benefits of sharing a story and who we could share a story with.   The rest of the day was spent completing book related activities and completing a school competition.  As part of the day we either wore our pyjamas or dressed up as a book character, we were very impressed with the children’s efforts and enthusiasm.

Pupil Voice. Science Council’s input into MST week.

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

For MST week we were given the opportunity to teach a science concept to the rest of the class. It was really fun to be at the front of the classroom doing our teachers’ job but of course they did help us out when we needed it.

We posed the question, ‘Is it a solid or a liquid?’ and then made a corn flour and water mix following given instructions. Our class mates offered lots of ideas as to what they thought and why and after we all had a feel of it, explored it and shared ideas, I taught them that it was in fact both – a colloid!

Lots of children commented that it was like ‘Oooblek’ or ‘slime’ and they all seemed to really enjoy the task too which made us feel great and confident.

Finally, we came up with a conclusion to answer the original question and wrote this up. All children have been given a slip to take home detailing how to make this at home and we are hoping families will get involved too and that pupils from BHJS will be teaching their parents about this colloid.

Year 4 made sling shot cars as part of Maths, Science and Technology Week.

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 4 children worked really hard to make slingshot cars. First we made the chassis using lolly sticks, dowelling and wheels. We needed to add a hook and make a slingshot. Next we designed and made the body of the car, thinking carefully about air resistance. Finally, we raced and evaluated our cars.

Technology in Year 6!

16th March 2020S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In Technology this week year 6 have completed a project to make a model playground. From this project we have really developed our thinking linked to structures and strengthening of frameworks. It has helped us progress a lot of technology skills like: sawing wood, measuring and cutting pieces to length, thinking about size, attaching parts using pva glue, hot glue from a glue gun, florists wire and even tieing bits with string. We have also worked in pairs and developed communication skills and learned that team work makes the project much easier to do. We had to be tenacious and persevere with lots of tricky and fiddly bits: we certainly worked very hard. Here are some of the many examples of playground structures we created.
