Making ‘Wave Bowls,’ in Year 6!

18th January 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

During Creative Week, we made Wave Bowls in year 6. These are funky and creative vessels that used triangular shaped foam board. One side was painted with a block colour of ink and the other side displayed a watercolour picture that was firstly drawn with a fine liner and portrayed an aspect of our unique personality. Using sugar paper to join the triangles with glue, we created individual shaped bowls that we think look funky and imaginative and showcase exciting, organic, decorative structures. We also enjoyed looking at the creations of our peers and evaluating and commenting on their work through analysis and comments that linked to the bowls – for e.g. neat joins, well drawn illustrations, good brush work when using ink etc.

Hat project in Year 6!

18th January 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

As part of Creative Week, year 6 took part in a hat project. We researched what type of people wear hats, why and considered the range of hats available. We studied two famous British milliners: Bundle Maclaren and Stephen Jones and then looked at a variety of hats that aim to outdo others and stand out in a crowd. After all this exploration, we then created our own hat prototypes using only white paper, scissors and glue and took on the role of milliners ourselves. We modelled our final design prototypes and evaluated successes and challenges with our peers.

Edward Hopper!

18th January 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

We studied the artist Edward Hopper and really concentrated on his famous piece of artwork, Nighthawks. We completed an art appreciation task that considered form and shape, the title, techniques used, the scene itself and the colour and light used within the painting. It was very interesting listening to others ideas about the painting and being able to share and discus what we thought.

Nighthawks is a 1942 oil on canvas painting that portrays four people in a downtown diner late at night as viewed through the diner’s large glass window. The light coming from the diner illuminates a darkened and deserted urban streetscape shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbour during the Second World War in 1941.

It has been described as Hopper’s best-known work and is one of the most recognisable paintings in American art. Within months of its completion, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago on May 13, 1942, for $3,000.

18th January 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

In Year 3 we have been completing lots of activities in Creative week.

We started off the week by making some moving face pictures and some moving creatures using paper and split pins. We had to create a frame on the back of the faces so that we could move the eyes and mouth.

We have been singing songs about bones and muscles.

We have investigated typography. We started off completing observational drawings of nuts, bolts, screws as well as twigs, branches and plants.

We created letters out of the different objects and drew them.

We went onto make our own island maps using typography.

We have been learning how to shade carefully and neatly. We took this shading a step further by using paint to create tints and shades.

To finish the week, we have used our drawing and shading skills to observe our favourite soft toy from home.

We have had a great week improving our artistic skills.

‘That History Bloke,’ in Year 6.

18th January 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

That History Bloke’ visited Year 6 and told us lots about World War 2. We were able to look at many artefacts and find out about what they were and what they were used for.  He also let us hear the sound of a real air raid siren from World War 2 – it was very loud!  We learned how to identify various German and British bomber and fighter planes from their silhouette, which was something children used to do during that time so they could warn people if enemy planes were coming.  We had great fun!

Year 5 visit The Word

13th December 2021S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the OpenZone at The Word this week. The children enjoyed exploring the Paint Application to produce a Christmas Tree Decoration, which was then laser cut on to a piece of wood for them to take home. They also used their coding skills to produce a Christmas themes animation. Later in the afternoon, they loved using the Lego WeDo sets to program their robots for different purposes. We all had a fantastic time!
