We are pleased to share with you the details of our next Mental Health Parent and Carer Peer Network Group.

This will take place on Thursday 24th March 2022 4-5.30pm.

During this session we will be focusing the discussion around children’s anxiety as this is what parents and carers told us was important to them. Therefore, if your child’s worrying is affecting their daily lives, then please do join us for this session. A member of the Healthy Minds Team will be there to give some tips and strategies on how you can help your child; and we will have some of the session open to chat through our own experiences.

Hoops4Health tournament.

8th March 2022S Admin (Biddick Hall Juniors)

On Friday 4th March, a team of Year 5 children went to the Vertu Motors Arena where they played in the finals of the South Tyneside Hoops4Health tournament. We earned a place in the finals and were in the top 3.  We played with determination and enthusiasm, but we didn’t manage to beat the other two teams and came 3rd, receiving bronze medals which were presented at the half time of the Newcastle Eagles match against Plymouth patriots. As a school we were so proud of our children’s behavior, effort, sportsmanship and attitude – well done!

Year 5 visit Beamish!

On Friday 4th March, Year 5 went to Beamish.  Our focus was on sketching what we saw, but the weather made that difficult! We went to see Norman Cornish’s house (an artist we have been studying in school) and enjoyed looking at the house that he lived in and did a lot of his art in. All of the children had a wonderful day (despite the weather) and asked the experts some fantastic, relevant questions which meant that they really got the most out of their day.  We did a typical Victorian pose on some of the photos – we didn’t smile.  That was because you had to stand still in your ‘pose’ for a whole minute without moving before the photo was taken, so a straight face was easier to keep than a smiling one.  Can you spot the photos where we are doing this?

I wanted to thank you for helping to make World Book Day 2022 such an amazing experience for your children.  I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the costumes that the pupils were wearing, it showed a great deal of imagination and I’m sure they all had great fun on the day.  And looking at the photos of staff, they all had a fabulous time getting in character too.  And with Comic Relief coming up later this month, I’m sure that will be another day to remember!

But education isn’t just about those special days.  It’s about developing the whole of the child, and seeing them grow and progress and a safe and supportive environment.  I was delighted to come in to school just before half term to join in the activities going on in all classes to launch the Rainbow Flag Award.  Schools have a legal duty to teach children and young people about the world they live in.  All children and young people live in a world, and go to schools, where LGBT+ people exist. The Rainbow Flag Award recognises this.  You as parents and carers are a crucial part of the school community, and your child’s education.   I hope that you will value and support the activities over the coming weeks and months as your children explore how to develop an inclusive and positive environment for all.  We all would want a school community free from discrimination, harassment or victimisation and where we can positively advance equality of opportunity for everyone, and where LGBT+ people and identities are positively represented across all areas of the curriculum.

Urgent Care for Children

9am until 9pm opening hours for South Tyneside Urgent Care for Children service 

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR PARENTS

With effect from Monday 7 March, the nurse-led service at South Tyneside District Hospital will be open every day from 9am until 9pm.  The temporary change has been necessary due to unforeseen staffing challenges.  Parents are being reassured that the service will continue to be available for 12 hours every day to see and treat the vast majority of children who attend hospital with urgent, but not life threatening, problems.

 

The temporary change means the service will open one hour later at 9am (instead of 8am) and close one hour earlier each day at 9pm (instead of 10pm).  Please see attached updated NHS information leaflet.

The Rainbow Flag Award

We have started our journey to becoming a Rainbow Flag School. The award is a national quality assurance framework with a focus on LGBT+ Inclusion for all schools and colleges. Taking part in the Rainbow Flag will help us meet legal, statutory and Ofsted requirements to LGBT+ inclusive. As a school, we need to make sure that we are including LGBT+ pupils and that we challenge any LGBT phobic bullying, just as we would with any other minority. Primary schools are strongly encouraged and enabled to cover LGBT content when teaching about different types of family. Today we had our launch day . The aim was to emphasise the world should be a safe place which allows you to be who you are regardless of your race, religion, gender or sexuality. We enjoyed creating a piece of artwork which showed that everyone is safe and welcome in our school. We also designed a logo.

Year 3 Benchball Tournament!

Year 3 had a great time at the Benchball Tournament at Boldon School. They were all very well behaved and really tried hard showing great skill. 3CL won a medal for winning their group. 3AE were very close finishing second for their group. Mrs Lynn and Miss Rochford were very proud of everyone. Well done!
